For the first time in history, technology has made personalized education feasible at scale.
Moreover, IoT and 3D printing have allowed individuals and small communities to build custom hardware endowed with data analytics capabilities. These innovations have led to the emergence of a powerful set of teaching tools for STEM education that can be used not only in schools, but even at home or at community tech centers/labs.
Even so, the motivating force behind why students are expected to engage with STEM is usually missing. Schools and academic institutions often focus on what students need to learn, with technology opening up new ways for how to learn. It is stories that answer the why. Stories are emotionally engaging. As research has shown consistently, deep intellectual engagement is preceded by deep emotional engagement. Indeed, this is one of our core principles: a good story, delivered by a master storyteller, can be a life changing learning experience that engages students to tackle difficult subjects.
